Overview
BackgroundLanguage learners often wish to consult dictionaries to find the meaning of a newly encountered word. Imperfect recognition of the word (such as mishearings or misrecognition of letters) impedes this lookup. In addition, beginning language learners may not be able to transform a morphologically complex word into its canonical citation form as found in a dictionary.
Innovative Technology
Researchers at the University of Maryland’s Center for the Advanced Study of Language have developed a system allowing language learners to look up a word in an electronic dictionary regardless of whether or not they know correct spelling of a word or know its canonical citation form.
Applications
· Electronic dictionary· Language learning software
· Spellcheck software
· Low-resource languages software
Advantages
· Increased ease of use and accuracy for users· Language learning software developers can create dictionary lookup tool without the need for extensive corpora
· Allows development of dictionary lookup tool for low-resource language
