Overview

Researchers at the University of Maryland have developed a new optical technique to determine the surface tension of a Newtonian liquid. The technique relies on detailed data analysis with respect to diffraction and fluid layer shape characteristics. Light and interference patterns scattered from the fluid layer provide data which is utilized for measuring the surface tension of the fluid. As a result, the invention provides a more accurate evaluation of the surface tension of a transparent fluid over earlier techniques.
