Overview

Background

Water based products with vitamins, minerals and other nutrients have a wide-ranging niche in the marketplace. These products are not only ideal for consumers interested in having a sugar-free or reduced sugar drink but also for disadvantaged groups in desperate need of a wholesome and easily consumable nutritive drink. The currently available nutri-drinks are composed of water-soluble nutrients (like vitamins B and C). The inclusion of fat soluble nutrients (like vitamin D) would provide an added advantage to this already nutrient enhanced product.

Innovative Technology

Researchers at the University of Maryland, College Park and Hollis, LLC have developed an innovative nutrient enriched sugar free water drink that is capable of delivering both water-soluble and fat-soluble vitamins and minerals. This is done by using a combination of homogenizing techniques that not only incorporates the various micronutrients but also enhances the product’s shelf life and stability under different storage conditions.

Advantages
1) Unlike currently available water drinks, this product combines both water soluble (Vitamins B and C) and fat soluble nutrients (Vitamins A and D and Omega – 3 fatty acids) in the same water-based drink.
2) The intended product does not use synthetic surfactants or ingredients known to cause allergies or cancer.

Applications
1) The inventors intend to market this drink as not just a health drink but also as an effective source of nutrients to disadvantaged groups and for post-disaster relief and humanitarian purposes.
